How to monetize ChatGPT and Claude plugins, GPTs and templates

Updated 14 October 2026

Short answer

You usually can't charge directly inside ChatGPT or Claude for a custom GPT or a project. Instead, sell what's portable: the instructions, knowledge files, templates, MCP servers or skills that recreate the experience, or a hosted service that the assistant connects to. OpenAI retired the original ChatGPT plugins in 2024 in favour of GPTs and newer app integrations, so build on current formats such as MCP and skills, and sell them through a marketplace or your own checkout.

What to package

Step by step

  1. 1

Separate the value from the platform

Work out what makes your GPT or Claude project useful (prompts, data, tools) and package it so it runs in more than one assistant.

  2. 2

    Use current integration formats

Build tool access as an MCP server or API and procedures as skills. These formats work across a growing number of clients.

  3. 3

Choose a model: template or service

Sell a one-time template that buyers set up themselves, or run a hosted API with a subscription that the assistant connects to.

  4. 4

    Respect platform rules

Follow OpenAI's and Anthropic's usage policies, and don't ship content or data you don't have the rights to.

  5. 5

    Document per assistant

Give separate setup steps for ChatGPT, Claude and others, with screenshots.

  6. 6

    Sell where builders browse

List on AI-specific marketplaces and link from your GPT's description or your docs to the paid version.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still sell ChatGPT plugins?
The original plugin system was retired in 2024. Build on GPTs, current app and connector integrations, or MCP-based tools, and sell the template or service around them.
Can I charge for a custom GPT?
Direct per-GPT pricing isn't generally available. Builders monetise through templates, linked services or paid versions sold elsewhere.
Do Claude skills and MCP servers work in other tools?
MCP is an open protocol supported by a growing set of clients, and SKILL.md skills are portable files. Say which clients you have tested.
Where can I sell these?
On your own site, on general stores like Gumroad or Lemon Squeezy, or on AI-specific marketplaces like BotAisle, which is pre-launch and accepting founding creators.
